Indonesia's halal deadline is 17 October 2026 — which imported products are affected?

We’re an overseas food and cosmetics brand exporting to Indonesia through a local distributor. We’ve heard there’s a halal deadline coming in October 2026 and that customs could start blocking products. Which of our products are actually affected, and if our items already have a halal certificate from our home country, is that enough — or do we need to do something on the Indonesian side?

You're right to treat this as urgent — it's a hard deadline, not a soft target.

What the date is. The grace period granted under GR 42/2024 for the second mandatory halal wave ends on 17 October 2026. From that date, products in scope that are sold or distributed in Indonesia must carry halal certification that Indonesia recognises.

Who's in scope. Broadly: imported processed food and beverages, raw ingredients, and certain cosmetics. If you export any of these into Indonesia, assume you're affected until a product-by-product check says otherwise.

What happens if you miss it. Enforcement bites at customs and distribution — non-compliant products can be held at the border or pulled from shelves. For brands with continuous shipments, that's a supply chain cut off mid-flow, not a fine to budget for.

The fastest route. You almost certainly don't have time to build local production. The realistic path is to get your existing halal certificate recognised in Indonesia. That works when your foreign halal body has a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with BPJPH; then registering it is mainly documentation and verification. If your certifier isn't recognised, the path is longer — which is exactly why you start now.

The honest warning: there will be a queue in September as everyone who delayed tries to clear the same system at once. Send us your product list and current certificates and we'll triage the foreign halal / MRA route and tell you what's realistically achievable before October.
